Compo Of the Day!!! xD
Titled ''Miss Lim'' By Chih Kiat
A Math, E Math, Chinese, English…one after the other in dreary succession. The more polite students of class 4E3 would go to the extent of snuffling their yawns, while those who didn’t seem to care much, yawned openly with their mouths wide open. The bell soon rang, signaling the start of the English period.
As Miss Melissa Lim walked into the class, a sense of Déjà Vu would overwhelm us students of 4E3. Like always, Miss Lim, our English teacher, clad in her all time favourite red shirt, would trudge into the classroom, carrying with her a colossal stack of miscellaneous items, ranging from her oh-so-handy tablet laptop, to stacks of unmarked worksheets-not that she receives much from our class in the first place, probably those from her other classes that she teaches. It would seem as though she would crumble under the hefty stack of lesson tools, but she would always make it to the teacher’s table in time, a haven for her already aching arms.
Her usual opening speech to us upon seeing us would be, “Ok ermm... Good morning class.” These fixed verses of lines would be heard every single day, 4 times a week. Chairs creak and scrape against the floor as we heaved our butts away from the chair to greet our English teacher. After having her laptop set up and connected to the overhead projector, the first image impregnated to the back of our retinas would be her favourite Manchester United wallpaper custom-made and always set as her background picture for her laptop.
In my mind I replayed, frame by frame, of me overhearing Miss Lim boasting in the Staffroom to her fellow colleagues of how she used to adore every single player in the team, and their unique fancy football footwork. Seems it was true then, about Miss Lim being a big fan of Manchester United. Silently, staring down at my tabletop, I sniggled to myself.
While searching for the pod cast of her all time favourite ‘Mr. Brown Show’ that she wanted to show us on that day, she accidentally opened a music file, Crush-David Archuleta. Hastily, she maneuvered the cursor to exit the program. But before she could successfully close the program, the damage was done, or rather, heard. Soon the whole class willed her on to run the song. Unwillingly, she allowed the music to carry on, with a pang of embarrassment and shyness overwhelming her facial expressions. Miss Lim would then automatically switch to a monotone look whist staring at the floor, to masquerade up her coyness.
After what seemed like an eternity, Miss Lim finally got the pod cast running. A cacophony of laughter and the dull voice of the pod cast lingered in the classroom. Miss Lim then went ahead to explain how the jokes are related to realistic world issues. Before ending off her lesson, Miss Lim would dish out homework, in the form of a comprehension passage to be done, or a composition to be written. Moans and groans would be heard like always.
The familiar ringing of the chime echoed around the class not long after, marking the end of yet another fun-filled and educational English lesson. Miss Lim would then end off her lesson with the usual, “ok ermm…thank you class”, before walking off to her next destination with all her paraphernalia
